Isabel Fernandes holds an MSc degree in Engineering Geology (1989) and a PhD in Geology (2005) on alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and the evaluation of aggregates for concrete. Currently, Isabel Fernandes is Assistant Professor at the University of Lisbon.
In addition to her lecturing duties, she supervises MSc and PhD students with theses covering different topics from engineering geology to evaluation of aggregates for concrete. She also develops R&D activities with commercial companies, in the areas of geologic and geotechnical mapping of large dams, reservoirs and tunnels, as well as in the aggregate characterization and diagnosis of concrete deterioration mechanisms by petrographic methods, with 84 unpublished reports.
She is co-author of 3 books, 10 book chapters, 26 international indexed scientific journals and of 78 papers in national and international conferences. She was the chairperson of the 11th Euroseminar on Microscopy Applied to Building Materials, held in Porto in 2007, organised 4 international workshops and 4 field trip visits for international groups. Recently, the book Petrographic Atlas: Characterisation of aggregates regarding potential reactivity to alkalis, of which she is editor and first author, was published by Springer.
She is member of the Board of Reviewers of the Springer journals Bulletin of Engineering Geology and Environment, Metallography, Microstructure, and Analysis and is invited reviewer of 9 peer review international journals. She was member of the Board of Reviewers of 6 international conferences. She was invited by governmental institutions of Argentina, Netherlands and Norway to evaluate research projects applying for financial support.
Isabel Fernandes was Guest Editor of a Special Issue of Springer journal Materials Characterization, published in 2009. She was a contributing member of the RILEM (International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures) Technical Committee TC 219-ACS: Alkali Aggregate Reaction in Concrete Structures: Performance Testing and Appraisal from 2008 to 2013, and is an
active member of the Portuguese Working Groups of the European Committee for Standardization CEN/TC 154 – Aggregates, CEN/TC 288 – Execution of Special Geotechnical Works and CEN/TC 341, Geotechnical Investigation and Testing. She is also member of the Applied Petrography Group (APG), which is part of The Geological Society of London, and of the International Alkali Aggregate Reaction (AAR) Committee. Main fields of research are:
•Geotechnical characterization of rock masses for large structures;
• Petrography applied to building materials (aggregates and concrete);
• Durability of building materials (alkali-aggregate reaction, sulfate attack, acid attack).
