The research of the Marine Geology and Geophysics group focuses on geological processes in marine basins, their relationship with the formation of mineral and energy resources, and the triggering of natural hazards. The research group gathers geophysicists and geologists with expertise in geodynamic processes, margin and basin research, and marine mineral resources. The research includes a variety of disciplines and techniques, such as marine geophysics, tectonics and geodynamics, structural geology, sedimentology, petrology, space geodesy and numerical and physical modelling. The group defined a set of regional targets, as a function of their scientific and societal interest or on-going cooperation with the private sector. Most of them are tackled as natural laboratories for the study of marine geo-processes with global relevance.
Scientific Highlights 2016
Assessment, Strategy And Risk Reduction for Tsunamis in Europe
The year of 2016 was the final year of the European FP7 project ASTARTE (Assessment, STrategy And Risk Reduction for Tsunamis in Europe) lead by Maria Ana Batista and which counted with the participation of a significant number of IDL members. The ultimate goal of ASTARTE was to reach a higher level of tsunami resilience in the North-East Atlantic region (NEAM), including the Mediterranean Sea, to improve preparedness of coastal populations and, ultimately, to help saving lives and assets. ASTARTE main results include: (i) an improved knowledge on tsunami generation involving novel empirical data and statistical analyses so that the long-term recurrence and associated hazards of large events in sensitive areas of the NEAM can now be established; (ii) the development of numerical techniques for tsunami simulation concentrating in real-time codes and novel statistical emulations, and (iii) the improvement of methods for the assessment of tsunami hazard, vulnerability and risk. In practical terms, the project resulted in a number of relevant scientific publications in specialized journals and public deliverables.
Arne Richter Award
The coordinator of the research group Marine Geology and Geophysics, João Duarte, was awarded the Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Early Career Scientists of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), which will be delivered during the 2017 EGU general assembly in Vienna. This award was attributed for his work in the fields of tectonics and marine geology, which include themes as diverse as the mapping of the faults that may have generated the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, the process of subduction initiation in the Atlantic and the future of Earth’s oceans and formation of supercontinents; as well as for his activities in the field of science communication. In this context, it can be highlighted the paper [Duarte et al., 2016, Geological Magazine] about the future of the oceans and the formation of a new supercontinent (Aurica) that had a big impact in the national media. Being this a personal award, in fact it rewards the effort of the whole team that resulted in a number of relevant publications during the last decades about the Southwest Iberian Margin. It can also be highlighted the publication of an American Geophysical Union monograph entitled Plate Boundaries and Natural Hazards edited by João Duarte and including the contribution of several IDL members.
