CITIZEN SCIENCE: myth or reality? CoastSnap case study by Fátima Valverde and Cristina Lira
Abstract: CoastSnap Cascais is a community beach monitoring project, part of an international network, that uses fixed points (monitoring stations) to monitor beaches. Beach users are invited to take mobile photos of Cascais beaches at the same location. The project was implemented at Cascais in 13 beaches, totalizing 16 stations and after 10 months has received, through social media, more than 500 photos. This citizen science project fulfilled its social objectives: to involve the county community in activities of preservation of ecological values linked to the knowledge of Cascais beach dynamics and provide scientific information derived from crowdsourcing information.
