The Earth Surface Processes group investigates coastal Natural Hazards, Climate Change at different time-scales and hydrological Resources. The group measures, monitors and models external geodynamics from source to sink, at the interface biosphere-lithosphere-hydrosphere using expertise in coastal processes, geomorphology, engineering geology, hydrogeology, paleontology, sedimentology, remote sensing/geospatial information.

Compositional Data Analysis (CoDA) as a tool to study the (paleo)ecology of coccolithophores from coastal-neritic settings off central Portugal
Species percentages as a standard analytical procedure to infer species paleoecological preferences, independently of taphonomical effects, has the closure problem that may lead to spurious correlations, biased statistical analysis and misleading interpretations. Compositional Data Analysis (CoDA) was applied to investigate the (paleo)ecological preferences of the coccolithophore record preserved in seafloor sediments, using as a case-study the central Portuguese submarine canyons.
Results of this study clearly confirmed the coastal-neritic distribution of certain species relative to other more oceanic taxa and the main differences between the studied submarine canyons and their adjacent shelf and slope areas. This study suggests that the (paleo)ecological signal may be preserved even in high energy unfavorable scenarios to be revealed by CoDA, providing the only statistical solution to validate (paleo)ecological interpretations obtained from percentages.

Nannofossils in 2011 El Hierro eruptive products reinstate plume model for Canary Islands
The Canary archipelago proximity to the Atlas orogen led to initial fracture-controlled models for island genesis, while later workers cited a Miocene-Quaternary east-west age-progression to support an underlying mantle-plume. If a mantle-plume is indeed responsible for the Canaries, the onshore volcanic age-progression should be complemented by progressively younger pre-island sedimentary strata towards the west. In this study, calcareous nannofossils in sedimentary xenoliths erupted during the 2011 El Hierro events date the sub-island sedimentary rocks to between late Cretaceous and Pliocene in age. This age-range reinstates the mantle-plume hypothesis as the most plausible explanation for Canary volcanism.
