The Climate change, atmosphere-land-ocean processes and extremes group focuses on the different components of the Atmosphere and Ocean, namely on dynamical processes of the atmosphere and ocean and their interactions, as well as climate change and variability.  Emphasis on coupled dynamics and inter-annual scales in the North Atlantic Basin and in Eastern Boundary systems is given within the group’s research. Moreover, weather driven hazards and paleoclimatology are also important lines of research. Applied research is also carried out, mainly on the following topics: ocean margin processes, renewable energy, climate services and remote sensing.  The group also largely contributes to regional and global climate studies, and Earth-System model development, participating in various international initiatives.

Scientific Highlights 2017

Future climate at regional to local scales

IDL has established a capacity for climate modelling at both the global and regional scales, actively contributing to the EC-EARTH and CORDEX international collaborations. EC-EARTH development, now in the preparation of the new CMIP6 intercomparison program, included IDL contributions to the surface model. EC-EARTH global fields were downscaled at IDL using WRF at very high climate resolution, and were included into IDL contribution to the Euro-CORDEX effort, where a new methodology for added value characterization and management of large multi-model ensembles was developed. The projection of future climate in Portugal has led to a large number of applications in the areas of wind and solar energy resources, and in the evaluation of the future weather driven hazards showing increasing likelihood of occurrence of large drought episodes, as well as major heatwaves and total burned area.


Satellite monitoring of the land surface

The deployment of the Satellite Application Facility for Land Surface Analysis (LSA-SAF), at IPMA, with the participation of several IDL researchers  with a coordinating role, has been in itself a very relevant achievement, guaranteeing the maintenance of this important EUMETSAT infrastructure in Lisbon. In addition, it has motivated important breakthroughs in research, by exploring new data and methods to characterize the thermal anisotropy of land surfaces, and by opening new perspectives on the use of remotely sensed LST to evaluate and improve land surface models. A specific downstream use of such results was the establishment of a support system for forest managers, relevant for the management of fire, which had large public impact during the 2017 extreme fire season. Overall, IDL is recognized for the in depth multidisciplinary studies of fire hazard in Mediterranean, Africa and Brazil.
